What makes an effective coach

— Coach_Upjohn.

What does make an effective coach?

An effective coach to me would be someone who can gain trust and be able to get an individual or a team motivated to achieve their goal. From my point of view I think a coach needs to be enthusiastic about the sport which they are coaching they really need to have a big passion for what they are doing, as I think if you had a coach who is massively eager and has a real love to the sport, another reason which can make an effective coach is it can be experience. Experience is a key aspect for the coach to be good at their role and be able to respond to the challenges which can be dawned onto the team during a match or training, from this it will also build a good reputation for the coach which will be good due to the coach will be recognised as a good coach and a good role model for their team. I think the coach is the most clinical aspect to a team without a coach or manager in a team there will be no guideless and no structure to the team/ individual, all of the top athletes work with their coaches every minute of the day from getting the athlete to training at 5.00am to making sure that the individual is eating right and is getting the correct recovery so they are ready for the next training session. For example, Chris Hinshaw who is the man, mind and coach for Mat Fraser, Rich Froning, Tia Clair Toomey and Team Mayhem. Chris Hinshaw is known for his knowledge and specialities in the aerobic capacity coaching and programming for CrossFit athletes, fitness enthusiasts and some of the best sports specialists in the world. Hinshaw can happily claim that he has successfully coached 28 CrossFit games champions and his athletes have filled more than 38 podium spots since 2003. From these facts it just shows the determination and the enjoyment Hinshaw has towards working with and training up some of the fittest and best athletes in the world.

One of my all-time favourite coach would be Freddie Roach; the reason for this is that is that even though after know he was starting to suffer from Parkinson’s disease, he still carried on fighting as he was so in love with the sport until he had to eventually retire from the sport of boxing, but soon moved onto coaching some of the best boxers in the world from the likes of Mike Tyson, Bernard Hopkins and to now with his 16 years of partnership with Manny Pacquiao.

summary

In this blog I will be doing a quick summary how university is going and how I am finding it and some of the good things and also so of the bad things.

The course so far has been very enjoyable, and I have really enjoyed all of the subjects we have covered so far. I wish to carry on my studies at Leeds beckett and progress further doing my degree which specialises in sport and exercise science.

The most enjoyable part of the is meeting new people and creating new friends and making every part of university enjoyable, my favourite subject so far would be the practical with Neil, these practical’s consisted of creating a session plan and performing it for 10 mins, this was really enjoyable as we worked as a group to create one of the best session plans out of the lot.

One thing which I haven’t really enjoyed about university would probably be in the first week where you had to get used to the settings and the layout of the university but at the same time trying to create new bonds and friendship, luckily for me I got into a good crowed of people after the first week but. I can see how some people may struggle to make friends and get into new social groups. A big factor to the social side I would say is joining a club. Because I joined the rugby team there has been many different socials which have been enjoyable and made many memories.

Overall, I would say that I have really got into to university and I am liking everything about it which was my main worry before coming to university but luckily it wasn’t a massive issue. I hope you have enjoyed the blogs which I have been putting out.

Coming into Crossfit

In this blog I will be speaking about when I first came into contact with CrossFit and how it helped me and what ambitions it has given me. I first came across CrossFit about 8 years ago after my dad went to do his CrossFit level 1 course and then onto his level 2 after visiting the box which he went to I was fascinated with the sport of CrossFit and how it involves all part of physical fitness and how fit these people actually were. When I became the age to start going to the gym at 16, i started going to the gym but unfortunately the gym I went to was all filled with bodybuilders and just not the space to do a simple CrossFit workout. From this I tried to adapt my workout so I could mix both weight and cardio together. But this still seemed hard as it was always busy.

I started looking at other gyms in my local area and was able to get a job at a local leisure centre as a lifeguard, this came with a massive advantage as attached to this facility there was a gym which did CrossFit which I received for free as I work there.

I soon started to be able to do the workouts which I used to struggle to do at my own gym. Due to the fact there was more room and better equipment for what I was looking to do in the gym I started to really process with the workouts and also some of the Olympic lifts by hitting a new PB in the gym with a 120kg jerk of the blocks which was a huge achievement for me and also being one of the youngest athletes in the gym.

My training and programming were really on point, but I still wasn’t training at an affiliate as the nearest one was 1.5 hours away from where I lived which was always a struggle. But luckily when I turned 17, I was able to drive myself there as I really wanted to be involved in some of the team WOD’s and also being able to improve my gymnastics/ Olympic lifts through their private’s session with their coaches.

Now I am at university I wish to carry on my CrossFit training by going to the local box and also being able to do some of my lifts at the university gym. To conclude I say that CrossFit is highly benefitable for anyone as it can involve everyone and anyone as a workout can easily be adapted to match the persons needs. I will carry on participating at CrossFit and hope to widen my knowledge on the daily to hopefully own my own gym in the near future.

Motivation

Motivation

Motivation is “ The direction and intensity of one’s effort”(sage,1977)In life everyone has motivation to do something if this is from playing at a top level in sport or being the best in something or down to the little things like reading a whole book within a month. Something that contributes to having good motivational skills is goal setting.

Goals

in everything you do in you day to day life there is a goal/ end result which is wanted to be achieved. These goes can be a short-term goal or into a long-term goal. With a short term goal these are the goal which can be achieved within a short amount of time e.g. a day to a week  to revise for an exam but on the other hand a long term goal is something that you want to achieve over a long time e.g. saving up for a mortgage for a house or wanting to start your own business but this comes difficult for people to maintain as it will be hard to keep focused and motivated as the goal is in the future and sometimes can feel like it is unachievable. But there are many different methods to keep yourself motivation this include mixing short-term goals and long term goals together so when you finish a short term goal it will offer a sense of direct and purpose for why you are e.g. you are budgeting your money or going to the gym 2 times a day to lose weight.

I think goal setting is a great way of having a clear idea of what it is you want to achieve and how you are going to achieve it both short and long term; for example I would like to of saved £10,000 for a deposit on a house in the next 5 year.

I have had many different situations in my life where I have set a goal for myself to achieve,

For example a goal that I set for myself was, when I dislocated my knee is late 2018, I set out a goal for myself that I wouldn’t let this get the better of me and I wouldn’t let it stop me from going to the gym or stop me from participating in sport. From this I set a goal for myself to keep on going to the gym and doing the exercise to help strengthen my knee back to normal state, even though it was a very rocky journey, I pulled through and come back to carrying on at the gym resulting in my smashing some of my PR ( Personal record) in the gym and also building the confidence to start playing rugby for the university team.
